Web Literacies for Communities Beyond the Margins

Co-designing a web literacies course to help internet users from marginalized communities become more critically informed and engaged web contributors

The next billion users are arriving on the Internet, including youth from marginalized communities in rural India. To them, the Internet seems like a foreign place that does not speak their language, works in mysterious ways and often represents their communities unfairly. What can be done to help these users become more critically informed and engaged web contributors? Vibhore Vardhan and youth from partner organizations in India are co-designing a web literacies course to answer that question. Using examples and activities that are locally relevant, the course teachers learners how to use the web, and exposes them to how it works, what is wrong with it and how it can be fixed.

Topics: Access, Equity and Justice; Children, Youth, Families and Seniors
