Theater and Family Planning among Nigeria’s Displaced Persons
Using theater to understand the overlooked importance of men's role in family planning decision-making among internally displaced persons in Nigeria
Men play a substantial role in family planning decision-making in Nigeria despite being overlooked in many humanitarian programs. This almost habitual snub of men’s input gives the wrong impression that family planning is solely a woman’s responsibility. Against the backdrop of high birth rates among internally displaced persons in Nigeria and a simultaneous swell in their need for humanitarian aid, research into family planning use and the role of men in family planning decision-making among displaced persons has become crucial. Using theater, Elaigwu Ameh’s research aims to understand family planning use among internally displaced persons in Nigeria and how displaced men’s knowledge, perceptions, attitudes and practices concerning family planning influence the use or non-use of contraception among this population.
