The Impact of Equitable Community-Engaged Research
Understanding and documenting what is needed to achieve more equitable collaborations between science institutions and underserved communities
Historically, most programming, evaluation and research on community engagement has been led by academic institutions, and frameworks and approaches have been informed by dominant culture worldviews even when following culturally responsive techniques. With growing public mistrust in science institutions and the power inequities between these institutions and the community organizations needed to support projects, these approaches and motivations rarely work.
Led by representatives from underserved communities across North America, this team aims to improve equity, diversity and inclusion in science. The goal is to understand the impact that community-led research is having on Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology and to document tension points and key factors necessary for achieving more equitable collaborations between science institutions and communities.
