Engaged Graduate Student Grants

Teaching and Education Leadership in India

Improving the community of practice for low-resource teachers in the Teach for India network

School enrollment rates in developing countries are growing, but basic literacy levels remain low. For example, more than half of fifth-grade students in India cannot read at a third-grade level. A problem of this scale requires systemic changes in teaching and education leadership. In collaboration with Teach for India and Meghshala, Rama Adithya Varanasi is examining and aiming to improve the community of practice for teachers in low-resource and marginalized schools. Varanasi and partners are studying how teachers use technology to create instructional materials and seek support from colleagues and peers with the goal of designing and developing a digital infrastructure that can start to address the challenges teachers face.
