Engaged Curriculum Grants
Sustainable Development and Community Participation in Ecuador
Building a new interdisciplinary summer program for undergraduates
In this project, Cornell’s Latin American Studies Program is combining classroom learning, internship experiences and community-engaged learning opportunities in Ecuador. The program addresses the political economy and environmental science behind sustainable development, while encouraging students to critically examine the ethics of development in a region of extraordinary bioecological and cultural diversity. In one community-engaged learning experience, students are working with Amazonian indigenous communities and learning about their efforts to promote development that is environmentally sustainable and responsive to local needs.
