Strengthening Higher Education Program Approvals

Creating a more efficient application process for the New York State Education Department’s Office of College and University Evaluation

Before a higher education institution in New York state can offer a new degree program, the Education Department’s Office of College and University Evaluation (OCUE) has to review, approve and register it. Cumbersome computer software and incomplete applications create bottlenecks in the review and approval process, and graduate student Nora Smithhissler is working with OCUE staff to evaluate the process, explore alternative solutions and provide recommendations. The team aims to remove barriers for completing the approval process for college and university programs, create a more appropriate workload for OCUE staff, reduce applicant complaints and help New York state maintain high standards for degree programs while staying on the cutting edge of education.
