Engaged Opportunity Grants
Service Partnership with Prisoner Express
Building community among first-year students through collaboration, service and critical reflection about social change
America’s mass incarceration rate has risen to levels that surpass any other developed country in the world. The Tatkon Center for First-Year Students is collaborating with Prisoner Express to raise awareness of this issue while promoting community service and educational exploration among new Cornell students. At volunteer work parties with the nonprofit, students will package and ship books to incarcerated people across the country. The service work will be augmented with lectures from expert faculty, discussions with the Prisoner Express director, and info sessions about related Cornell opportunities such as the Cornell Prison Education Program and the Crime, Prisons, Education and Justice minor.
