Engaged Opportunity Grants

School-Based Nutrition Education and Children’s Diets

Studying the potential disconnect between the nutrition knowledge children gain at school and their eating behaviors at home.

Cornell Cooperative Extension uses the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH), a school-based nutrition program, to address the issues of childhood obesity. This project seeks to understand how children’s participation in the CATCH program influences their eating behavior at home. Cornell students play a key role in studying the transfer of knowledge and skills from school to home. They attend meetings with community members, conduct community observations, collect and analyze data and submit written reflections on these experiences. This process provides students with a deeper understanding of social and environmental barriers to healthy diets as well as the experience of working with a low-income rural population in Newfield, New York.
