Engaged Curriculum Grants

Restoring Joint Function

Demonstrating how biomaterials scientists, engineers and orthopedic surgeons can partner to improve patient outcomes

Biomaterials scientists and engineers design materials and devices to interact with the body to heal or restore function. In partnership with the Hospital for Special Surgery, this team is developing a biomaterials curriculum that will help undergraduates to better understand the diverse perspectives of engineers, clinicians and patients; learn how to design orthopedic implants; and recognize standards of responsible scientific conduct. This curriculum will give students a unique opportunity starting in their first year at Cornell to see how biomaterials scientists and engineers can work with orthopedic surgeons to develop implants that solve real problems for clinicians and improve outcomes for patients.
