Engaged Opportunity Grants

Radical Self-Care for Students Working for Social Justice

Educating community-engaged leaders on the importance of radical self-care.

The Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives (OADI) supports students from underrepresented backgrounds who are low-income and/or are the first in their families to attend college as they grapple with the challenges of being a student. Many of these students are also committed to working for social justice through community engagement. This balancing act can take a toll on their mental health and wellbeing.

This project empowers these students with knowledge, practices and experiences they can use to exercise radical self-care through a daylong retreat of workshops, panels, hands-on activities and discussions. Students learn from community activists who commit to radical self-care and strategize how to take care of themselves as they balance life as a full-time student and community-engaged leader. The project culminates with a day of reflection on the importance and impact of self-care.
