Engaged Opportunity Grants

Public Conversations about Climate Change on New England Islands

Educating the public about the local evidence for climate change and its effect on the Isles of Shoals.

The Isles of Shoals is a grouping of nine islands six miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine, and the site of Cornell’s Shoals Marine Laboratory. This project seeks to talk to members of the public about the evidence for and effect of climate change on the people and fisheries of the Isles of Shoals. Students travel to Star Island and its renowned Oceanic Hotel for two climate change conferences hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ. Students engage with the public by tabling on the porch of the Oceanic and engaging conference attendees in discussions about climate change. Students also are creating an educational display, a brochure and a short documentary film about the archaeological research on Smuttynose Island and the ways that research informs discussions of changing climate.
