Preserving the Ch’ol Language
Creating language resources to empower the Ch'ol-speaking community
The languages of the world are disappearing faster than ever, especially those spoken by marginalized populations. The Mayan language Ch’ol is no exception. Despite the fact that a growing number of linguists and academics are producing scholarly works on the language, there is still a lack of substantial material in Ch’ol for Ch’ol speakers. This student team is collaborating with students from Ch’ol speaking communities to document narratives in Ch’ol and support retention by co-developing resources in the language, including an illustrated dictionary by local artists.
