Engaged Opportunity Grants
Poverty Stoplight in Elmira, New York
Presenting a poverty reduction plan at an international conference on poverty elimination
The Poverty Stoplight is recognized by the United Nations as an effective strategy for reducing poverty and is active in more than 30 countries. In 2018, staff from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chemung County, with support from community leaders and Cornell faculty, launched the program in Elmira — now called Move Forward Elmira.
The team is presenting their progress at Cerrito 2019: Innovations in Poverty Elimination. At the conference they are also interviewing project leaders from other programs to better understand what works and what doesn’t to help people move out of poverty. This information will help determine how the Poverty Stoplight can help address poverty in New York state and also identify how Cornell faculty and students can become involved.
The Conference: Cerrito 2019: Innovations in Poverty Elimination
Topics: Children, Youth, Seniors and Families; Economic Vitality and Entrepreneurship; Energy, Environment and Sustainability
