Engaged Graduate Student Grants

Place, Identity and Environmental Stewardship

Exploring how environmental stewardship practices can promote dialogue among diverse voices

Community gardening, wetlands restoration, tree planting — all are examples of civic ecology. In this project, Anne Armstrong is collaborating with Rocking the Boat, a nonprofit youth development organization in the Bronx, to examine how, in recreating place, civic ecology practices enhance community.

One dimension of community is a sense of membership. The team aims to explore how Rocking the Boat’s group-building and civic ecology activities influence identity among teen participants. Armstrong will interview participants and is also collaborating with staff to observe and lead program activities.

Topics: Children, Youth, Seniors and Families; Energy, Environment and Sustainability
