Migration Stories: Community Empowerment Through Art
Presenting art viewing and artmaking workshops to complement an exhibit on global migration
In fall 2019, the Johnson Museum of Art is mounting a special exhibition that features 50 contemporary works of art addressing one of today’s most pressing humanitarian issues: global migration. While the artworks speak to the European refugee crisis and the U.S./Mexico Border tensions, the undergraduate students involved in educational programming are focusing on local relevance and engagement.
As a sanctuary city where K-12 students speak more than 60 languages, Ithaca has abundant opportunities for deepening intercultural understanding with the aim of increasing empathy toward immigrants. Cornell undergraduates are working with the Tompkins County Public Library and the Ithaca City School District’s English as a New Language Department on raising intercultural awareness through art viewing and artmaking workshops.
