Engaged Opportunity Grants

Learning by Leading

Growing the next generation of environmental leaders through a student leadership development program at Cornell Botanic Gardens

Cultivating the next generation of environmental leaders is a vital step in solving present and future environmental crises. Cornell Botanic Gardens believes that students learn best by leading and doing and is, therefore, implementing a new Learning by Leading model. The program is co-created with students and allows them to progress from learner to participant to leader as quickly as possible.

As leaders, students craft environmental education programs with staff mentors who provide knowledge, skills and programs that engage Botanic Gardens visitors. This grant supports the launch of the program by creating a student Garden Ambassador team that designs and delivers educational programs that inspire positive environmental action with Garden visitors.
