Increasing Active-Living Opportunities in Rural Upstate New York
Engaging citizen scientists to understand neighborhood features that influence active living in rural upstate New York
Regular physical activity is good for our health, yet more than half of Americans don’t exercise enough. This is especially true for people in rural areas, where inadequate recreational facilities, challenging geography and poor transportation can lead to sedentary lifestyles. Brian Lo’s dissertation research is using a citizen-science approach to understand what encourages or stands in the way of active living in rural upstate New York. It will identify ways to help people lead active and healthy lives. Brian will work closely with 16 citizen scientists as they assess the build environment in their communities, gather in focus groups to discuss their findings and develop action plans for improving active-living features in the places they call home.
