Healthy diets in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Developing curriculum to address malnutrition and promote healthy eating
Many low-income countries face multiple burdens of malnutrition, including persistent undernutrition alongside obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, in many of these settings, guidance to address malnutrition has focused primarily on undernutrition. In collaboration with partners at Weill-Cornell Center for Global Health and the GHESKIO Centers in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, we seek to develop context-sensitive nutrition education materials to promote healthy diets in adults, including among patients and healthcare staff, in order to address the increasing prevalence of obesity and non-communicable diseases. In partnership with the nutrition team at GHESKIO, Cornell students are working remotely to identify typical dietary patterns in Port-au-Prince, explore existing best practice recommendations to promote healthy diets and adapt those materials for the Haitian context.
