Examining the social impact of community health centers in rural New York
Since its origins growing out of the 1960s’ War on Poverty, the Community Health Center (CHC) program has addressed the social determinants of individual and family health. Emily Parker’s research examines the way CHCs address poverty among their patients and communities. In partnership with a rural health center, she is conducting in-depth interviews to understand low-income patients’ experiences at the health center, the ways staff describe their services and interactions with patients, and the center’s social impact on its community— including how it connects patients to social services, addresses family or economic issues affecting patients’ health and engages in larger community health issues. The goal is to provide the center with valuable evidence to inform their practices and services.
