Grants for Faculty Research on Engagement
Engagement through MOOCs
Community-engaged learning is not limited by geography, and Cornell faculty and students are collaborating with partners from New York to Chile to China. But travel costs and logistics make international community engagement particularly challenging. Online engaged learning has the potential to overcome these barriers, but an important question remains: Do online partnerships achieve the same impacts as in-person partnerships? Might students and partners lose out on important aspects of engaged learning, or might they actually have positive experiences that don’t occur in face-to-face settings? In this project, researchers are assessing the outcomes of community partnerships that are part of massive open online courses (MOOCs). By comparing what students learn in partnerships conducted online with those conducted face-to-face, the team is opening up new possibilities for meaningful, mutually beneficial collaborations.
