Emergency and Disaster in Tompkins County

Developing a coordinated county-wide plan to handle a mass fatality event

Major emergencies and disasters are increasingly common. Emergency preparedness plans are important documents that direct the use of resources and personnel in the event of an emergency, including those related to mass fatality events. Although partners in Tompkins County have mass fatality plans for use by their organizations, there is an opportunity to develop a unifying county-wide plan to better coordinate resources, partners and activities.

In this project, students and faculty affiliated with the Cornell Master of Public Health Program are working closely with and learning from key stakeholders at the Tompkins County Office of the Medical Examiner and the Tompkins County Health Department. They will assess existing capabilities and plans to inform the preparation of a coordinated mass fatality plan for the county, including hazard analyses, family assistance center plans, and morgue overflow plans.
