Engaged Opportunity Grants
Early Childhood Astronomy Education
Teaching astronomy to underserved populations in Upstate New York
This project team is organizing a pilot project to run monthly educational activities for preschoolers in two Agri-Business Child Development (ABCD) centers. Founded in 1946, the ABCD program has 13 federal- and state-funded centers in New York state that offer comprehensive early childhood education to families that qualify. The goals of this project are to spark interest in astronomy in ABCD students, present them with a diversity of science role models and provide astronomy graduate students with an opportunity to gain hands-on leadership, outreach and educational experiences. In collaboration with ABCD, the team has a three-year plan to expand this project to more centers across New York.
