Engaged Graduate Student Grants
Debt-Migration and Family Separation
Collecting, analyzing and sharing stories from deported Guatemalan migrants
This project gathers together the stories of Guatemalan migrants who have been detained and deported from the United States. The team is using a variety of media — including a documentary film, online blog and social media — to share these migrant narratives across the U.S. and Central America, while examining how forms of detention and migration are intertwined. The grant funds Te Conecta, a non-profit organization that helps migrants secure employment upon their return to Guatemala, and supports John Kennedy’s efforts to partner with Te Conecta on ethnographic fieldwork and semi-structured interviews.
