Community-led Linguistic Work with the Ch’ol Language
Strengthening language-preservation efforts by fostering international exchanges between scholars
Languages of the world are vanishing at an alarming rate. Most at risk are those spoken by marginalized minorities. The Mayan language Ch’ol is no exception. Recently, however, a growing number of Ch’ol-speaking linguists and academics have been producing scholarly works on their native language, bringing it to the attention of other scholars and linguists.
The goal of this project is to support Ch’ol-speaker Morelia Vázquez Martínez as she continues her work during a trip to the United States. Vázquez is presenting at the Society for the Study of Indigenous Languages of the Americas before traveling to Cornell to help archive Ch’ol narratives and share experiences on community-led projects with other researchers.
