Engaged Opportunity Grants

Community Engagement in Pittsburgh

Involving students and alumni in boosting public health, food insecurity and urban renewal through community-engaged projects facilitated by Amizade, a fair trade learning organization.

Organized for the first time in 2017, students and alumni who have received fellowships through The Cornell Commitment office travel to Pittsburgh for a one-week community-engaged project organized by Amizade, a nonprofit organization that promotes volunteerism and community service throughout the world. These Commitment students and alumni participate in various service projects connected to public health, food insecurity and urban renewal. Throughout the project, they engage in nightly reflections facilitated by Amizade staff members who encourage critical reflection and discussions on intercultural competence and integrative learning. As a result of this collaborative process, local organizations benefit from the assistance of students and alumni and the students and alumni experience the personal and professional growth that enables them to undertake future service projects and partnerships.
