Celebrating the Sustainable Local Food System
Showcasing the abundance and creativity within the local food system with an emphasis on food justice, agroecology, health and well-being
This project is a conference that showcases the abundance of creativity and knowledge in the local food system. Farmers, community groups, policymakers and academics join together to share ideas and examine questions around food justice, agroecology, health and well-being, and ultimately build and celebrate a sustainable, just local food system. Students help plan the conference and gain leadership and event management experience while deepening their connections both on and off campus. Community collaborators present workshops and field trips. A panel of diverse participants discuss the role of public policy in addressing inequalities in the food system. This conference is explicitly aimed at moving beyond the academy and fostering action as well as expanding understanding of crucial food system issues.
Additional funding came from the Polson Institute for Global Development, the Einaudi Center for International Studies, the Institute for the Social Sciences, the Park Foundation, the Sustainable Tompkins Mini-Grant Council, and GreenStar Natural Foods Market.
