Engaged Opportunity Grants

Building Opportunities for High School Students in Colombia

Cornell and Universidad de Magdalena students designing and implementing a project to enrich education at Sanmario High School

In this project, Cornell undergraduates work with peers from Universidad del Magdalena (UM) to design and carry out a project to supplement education at Sanmario High School. Both the university and high school are located in Santa Marta, Colombia, a community shaped by conquest, slavery, civil war and extreme socioeconomic differences. The university students spend a semester video conferencing to learn about each other’s academic abilities and assess needs and opportunities specific to the high school, for which they create an enrichment project with academic and practical components. The following semester, the Cornell students travel to Santa Marta to implement the project with their UM partners.
