Bolstering the New York Dairy Industry
Strengthening the state’s dairy industry by implementing and assessing key community partnerships, workforce development and producer-through-consumer education
Milk is the number one agricultural product in New York state, with milk and dairy products valued at $2.5 billion a year and accounting for nearly 26,000 jobs. Still, the state is not immune to the struggles beleaguering the U.S. dairy industry, including low prices and workforce uncertainty. In this project, faculty, students and partners are teaming up to strengthen the New York dairy industry by educating farmers about the intersection between animal health and food quality and safety, offering processors easy access to extension support and workforce development, and increasing consumer awareness and confidence. Throughout the project, the team is using surveys, interviews, questionnaires and other assessment strategies to evaluate what works and what doesn’t.
