Engaged Opportunity Grants
Alternative Leaders
Bringing together students from Cornell and TST-BOCES Regional Alternative School to bolster leadership and teamwork skills.
Trust building, conflict resolution, communication and community decision-making are essential skills in the communal setting of an alternative high school. This project, a joint effort between the Cornell Team and Leadership Center and TST-BOCES Regional Alternative School, supports university and alternative high school students as they cultivate their respective talents for leadership and teamwork. The process begins with Cornell students training in leadership, team development and community engagement. The students in turn work with the high school students to build their self-confidence and develop problem-solving skills and the interpersonal and group skills needed for a healthy school experience. The Cornell students are encouraged to look past their own assumptions about what it means to be a leader and what values and norms drive the development of youth from varied socio-economic and cultural groups.
