Engaged Opportunity Grants
A Latinx Community Zine Project
Students, faculty and community partners working together to publish Bien Acompañada, a Latinx zine for the Ithaca community
Zines – or small-run artisanal publications – have been used as tools of resistance in Latinx and black communities, providing an outlet for voices that may not otherwise be heard. As Cultura Ithaca launches a Latinx community zine, Bien Acompañada, organizers are inviting Cornell faculty and students and other community partners to join the collaboration. The project began in October 2018 with a bookmaking workshop and includes the production of three issues of the zine: one general issue and two issues on special topics such as healing, recovering history or undocuqueer lives. Students are participating in the project by creating artwork and stories, working on the logistics of producing a print publication for local distribution and developing an accompanying website.
