Engaged Curriculum Grants

2017-18 Engaged Curriculum Grant Recipients

Engaged Curriculum Grants fund teams who are integrating community engagement into new and existing majors, minors and courses — putting community-engaged learning at the very heart of the university.

Planning Grants

  • Bringing Specimens to Life
    Teaching students to communicate scientific knowledge that promotes local diversity and inspires an interest in the natural world.
  • Engaged Performance
    Creating opportunities for campus engagement, cultural outreach and community building through music.
  • Enhancing Community Media
    Linking students with an emerging community news exchange to produce high-quality, comprehensive reporting on key issues throughout Tompkins County.
  • Environmental and Experiential Learning in Washington, D.C.
    Developing collaborative research and internship opportunities in environmental sectors with community partners and environmental groups in Washington, D.C.
  • Shared Vision Planning for Lake Ontario
    Using team-based consulting to addresses water resource challenges faced by communities on the shores of Lake Ontario.
  • Sustainable Engineering in Context
    Bringing engineering students together so they can take a team approach to finding sustainable solutions to real-world problems.

      Closely engaging stakeholders with a cross-course collaboration that inspires awareness of climate adaptation and design innovation.
    • Field Geophysics
      Bringing students out of the classroom and into the field, where they use geophysical methods to collect data about the natural history of the region.
    • Law and Policy of Food Systems
      Enabling students to delve into the difficult technical and policy issues facing food systems today.
    • Materials Science and Engineering for High School Students
      Educating high school students about materials science and engineering through a nationally distributed learning module and a community outreach course.
    • Minor in Health, Hospitality and Design
      Creating a sustainable and healthy future through a minor that promotes design innovation, research and community engagement.
    • Theatre and Social Change
      Bringing local stories to the stage to illustrate the cultural impact of climate change on Finger Lakes communities.

      Encouraging girls and underrepresented minority students in middle school and high school to pursue computational science.
    • Communicating Psychological and Brain Science to the Public
      Finding fun and engaging ways to connect children and families with developments in psychological and brain science.
    • Cornell Legal Research Clinic
      Addressing the pressing need for legal advocacy among community members.
    • Crime, Prisons, Education and Justice Minor
      Exploring issues around the criminal justice system and incarceration policy through first-hand experiences with prison education.
    • Engaged Learning for International Migration
      Conducting research projects in the field and developing strategies that will help improve conditions for immigrant farmworkers.
    • Environmental and Sustainability Communication
      Using strategic communication to accelerate public understanding of sustainability and environmental issues.
    • Food Systems Approaches to Food Safety
      Training students to detect, solve and ultimately prevent outbreaks of food-borne illness throughout the farm-to-table continuum.
    • Food Systems for Global Health
      Exploring challenges and providing solutions to food and water safety issues that touch every part of the globe.
    • Gateways to International Learning
      Creating curricula that serves as a gateway for international and engaged experiences that produce successful global partnerships.
    • Interdisciplinary Tax Services for Low-Income Immigrants
      Training accounting and law students to assist low-income immigrant taxpayers in their taxation and legal needs.
    • The Professional Practice of Entrepreneurship
      Taking an interdisciplinary approach to social entrepreneurship by creating an aquaponics system for growing organic vegetables and fish in Chile.
    • Using the Tools of Finance to Meet Social Needs
      Creating engagement opportunities for students to explore how sustainable finance and impact investing can support communities and the environment.
