Yasmin Ballew ’23
Major: Industrial and Labor Relations
Minors: Inequalities, Law and Society
Concentration: Pre-law
The issues of public concern I’m passionate about are … racial justice.
Engagement experience: Freshman year I volunteered with Alternative Spring Breaks as a Harlem Grown trip participant. We worked to address issues of food insecurity, gentrification, and homelessness and engaged in a thought-provoking service-learning curriculum.
As an Engaged Ambassador, I … facilitate the capstone [part of the Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership] where I strive to promote meaningful discourse and challenge participants to devise meaningful models of change.
I got involved because … I wanted to create lasting change on my campus community and beyond and OEI gave me a family of like-minded community-engaged leaders.
My friends would say I’m … passionate, kind and a little chaotic.
Best Cornell memory (so far!): Matcha with friends at Libe café
Fun fact: I foster kittens and I’m vegan 🙂
Future plans: Public interest lawyer with a focus on marginalized communities
