Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership

Scholars in Our Society and Africa (SOSA)

Earned Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership: 2020

Mission: SOSA’s mission is to educate and enrich growing minds in underserved communities in Africa.

For our project with our partner, we …were able to combat cultural barriers and emphasize the importance of education of feminine hygiene and the menstrual cycle for young Nigerian girls.

It was important for us to commit to our community partner because … many girls do not attend school during their period due to stigmatization. Thus, our commitment to our community partner allowed us to educate young girls about feminine hygiene.

Our community partner taught us … that cultural differences can be mitigated by effective communication and acknowledging the perspectives of others.

Our group has benefited in that … we were able to create a longstanding reputation for our organization in Lagos, Nigeria.

We’ve also learned that the community-engaged leadership program is … essential to enhancing the quality of partnerships especially in international settings.

With this experience, we plan to … have annual Nigeria Winter Women’s Health Workshops.
