Earned Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership: 2020
About Phi Delta Epsilon: Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity creates physicians of integrity with a life-long commitment to our guiding principles of philanthropy, deity and education through fellowship, service, mentoring and formal training in leadership, science and ethics.
Community partner: Southern Tier AIDS Program
For our project with our partner, we … conducted biweekly sharps collection days in which we cleaned the syringe exchange property and engaged with the patient population around the clinic.
It was important for us to commit to our community partner because … we are committed to health equity and community engagement. Because patients with substance use disorders are often stigmatized by society, we wanted to make sure that we worked with them through an ethical and competent framework.
Our community partner taught us … about the unique medical barriers faced by those with substance use disorders.
Our group has benefited in that … we were able to gain essential experience working with vulnerable populations.
We’ve also learned that the community-engaged leadership program is … an essential component for proper critical reflection and program planning.
With this experience, we plan to … continue our site clean-ups while expanding our services to meet our community partner’s philanthropic and clinical needs.
