Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership

Lillian Kahris ’19

Hometown: Buffalo, New York

Major: Industrial and Labor Relations

Minors: Law and Society, Inequality Studies

I work with my community(ies) to address … sexual violence prevention, education inequality and community-controlled economic development.

My friends would say I’m … outspoken, outgoing and passionate.

Fun fact: I work for Upward Bound at the Public Service Center.

The best part about the community-engaged leadership program is … learning from my peers.

For my Stage 2 committed project, I … did research with the Partnership for the Public Good in Buffalo, a community-based think tank. I was able to provide my academic research skills and add to the body of research about topics concerning community-controlled economic development.

My community partner(s) taught me … the importance of community wisdom and seeking out diverse perspectives.

I’ve also learned that engaged leaders … are good listeners, are open to feedback/criticism and prioritize critical reflection.

Other projects and organizations I’m committed to include … Cornell Social Consultants, Cornell Upward Bound, Pre-Orientation Service Trips and Gender-Justice Advocacy Coalition.

I plan to continue my journey as an engaged leader by … working at a nonprofit or community-based organization.
