Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership
Jaylexia Clark ’19
Major: Industrial and Labor Relations
Minors: Law and Society, Policy Analysis and Management
I’m passionate about … workers’ rights as it relates to the oppression of black and brown people nationally and internationally.
Engagement experience: High Road Fellowship, Iscol Public Service Summer Fellow, Cornell in Cambodia, Public Service Scholar at Tompkins County Workers Center, speaker at Congressional Black Caucus Education Forum
As an Engaged Ambassador, I … try to encourage more students to learn about community engagement and see the endless possibilities for getting involved and making a difference regardless of where you find yourself.
I got involved because … community engagement is a part of my value system, and I wanted to be part of a space on campus that also values community engagement. I stayed with OEI because it continues to value students getting involved in their communities as well as student input about how to create opportunities that lead towards sustainable development and positive change.
My friends would say I’m … corny.
Best Cornell memory (so far!): 2017 People’s March on the Arts Quad
Fun fact: I have visited more countries than U.S. states.
Future plans: I plan to obtain my JD/PhD in sociology with a focus on employment and labor law wherein I hope to conduct research that will have a positive impact on the world of work and lead to systemic change.
