Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership
Early College Awareness
Earned Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership: 2020, 2021
Mission: Early College Awareness is committed to serving disadvantaged and underserved students by providing greater agency to higher education by informing grade school students about the different aspects of attending and applying to college.
Our community partner is … the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutoring program at Ithaca High School
For our project with our partner, we … designed an 11th grade curriculum to create pathways to college.
It was important for us to commit to our community partner because … many students, especially in rural areas, can struggle to attend college with mentors that can speak to the benefits of higher education and help them with the application process.
Our community partner taught us … our curriculum not only has the goal of helping students reach college, but also guide them in achieving goals they set for themselves. This could be applying to a summer job or describing themselves in an essay — all of which makes them better prepared for their overall future.
Our group has benefited in that … we’ve become more aware of how the college process has changed over the years and what parts of that process Ithaca students specifically need help with.
We’ve also learned that the community-engaged leadership program is … a place where we can take time to think about our organization outside of the specific tasks we do. Much of this is reflecting on the relationships we’ve made between our members and understanding how the ways we work together impacts what we create for our community partner.
With this experience, we plan to … effectively engage with our community partner students through live sessions.
