Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership

Christopher Hanna ’19

Hometown: Rochester, New YorkChristopher Hanna

Major: Development Sociology

Minors: Inequality Studies; Policy Analysis and Management

I work with my community(ies) to address … ruling class attacks on working people.

My friends would say I’m … all over the place.

Fun fact about me: I’m a certified mindfulness meditation instructor and facilitate mindfulness sessions for groups.

The best part about the Certificate in Engaged Leadership is … the ability to work with students across difference to exchange variant skills, resources and experiences.

For my Stage 2 committed project … I am working with the Tompkins County Workers’ Center and the Campaign for New York Health to build up a local base of working-class single-payer healthcare advocates.

My community partner(s) are teaching me … how to organize to win.

I’ve also learned that engaged leaders … meet communities where they’re at by advancing agendas set not by themselves, but rather, by the communities being engaged.

Other projects and organizations I’m committed to include … Cornell’s United Students Against Sweatshops local, Amnesty International, Palestine solidarity work and miscellaneous agitation.

I plan to continue my journey as an engaged leader by … reminding myself daily nothing is more important than fighting for the dignity and rights of the people.
