Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership
Alessandra Cruz ’22
Hometown: Queens, New York
Major: Global and Public Health Sciences
I work with my community(ies) to address … health inequity that is rampant in minority communities in north Brooklyn and other parts of the U.S. that do not receive quality care or lack a relationship with their physicians.
My friends would say I’m … compassionate, hard working, driven and courageous
Fun fact about me: I like to write poetry and to cook!
The best part about the community-engaged leadership program is … my peers and the conversations we have.
For my Stage 2 committed project, I … served in the emergency room of the Philippine General Hospital as a volunteer in triage.
My community partner(s) taught me … to be wary of intentions and to listen to the community’s needs and desires.
I’ve also learned that engaged leaders … are vulnerable.
Other projects and organizations I’m committed to include … the Cornell Catholic Leadership team and Human Ecology Ambassadors.
I plan to continue my journey as an engaged leader by … creating community partnerships through research in health equity and education.
