I work with my community(ies) to address … equitable access to healthcare.
My friends would say I’m … hydrated and exfoliated.
Fun fact: I am fluent in German.
The best part about the community-engaged leadership program is … engaging with a diverse array of leaders from across campus all interested in becoming better human beings and helping others to do the same.
For my Stage 2 committed project, I … served at Lincoln Medical Center in the South Bronx and learned how to incorporate advocacy into the provision of care. I helped to increase comfort of patients by being a more accessible individual in terms of knowledge level. In a room that could be full of people in white coats, patients expressed how it was helpful to have me in the space at times. Others appreciated times when I would converse with them or simply connect with them personally. I also helped to support a community effort in a partnership between the hospital and Guns Down, Life Up in terms of publicity and fundraising.
My community partner(s) taught me … that all of the work I have been doing to this point has been leading me to medicine.
I’ve also learned that engaged leaders … can have radically different approaches to leadership, but — through this diversity of styles — we help each other to grow and develop our leadership capabilities.
Other projects and organizations I’m committed to include … Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iscol Scholar, Multicultural Greek and Fraternal Council, Community and Respect Resident Advisor and Black Students United.
I plan to continue my journey as an engaged leader by … working with International Rescue Committee in Atlanta, supporting migrants in resettling in Atlanta.
